2014 MLB Draft: UNLV's Erick Fedde Goes to Washington Nationals at #18

A bit of a surprise as he won't be throwing a ball for at least a year. Nationals must think a lot of him. He was worth this pick when healthy but who knows what they'll be getting when he comes back. Check back in a year.

An injured Erick Fedde (Tommy John cut) is better than no Fedde at all. At least, that's what the Washington Nationals think. I suspect they figure it will take him a year or two to get healthy and then they'll see what they have. If he does it, they could have a great young starting rotation in about two years.

The Nationals took a big risk by taking Fedde in the first round but they must like him that much to wait maybe two seasons to see what he can do in minor league baseball. In his time at UNLV this past season he was the ace of the program with an 8-2 record, 1.76 ERA, struck out 82 and allowed just .206 opponents batting average. For his career he was 21-10 and had a 3.18 ERA.

Adding Fedde to a potential rotation with Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman could be a deadly combination in the next few years.
