San Diego State became the first team eliminated from the Louisiana-Lafayette region when their bats and pitching went south in their 9-2 loss to Mississippi State. The Aztecs season had a rough time by not having head coach Tony Gwynn since he took a medical leave on March 24 to continue his fight against cancer.
The Aztecs rallied as a program to have a strong finish to the season which included a great run in the Mountain West tournament where they made it difficult on themselves to win the conference tourney. When they got to the regional round of the NCAA tournament they just ran into some really good teams that got the best of them.
The teams left are undefeated Mississippi State who awaits the winner between surprise Jackson State and host Louisiana-Lafayette.
