2014 NCAA tournament projections: How many Mountain West teams will earn a bid

The Mountain West should be getting at least two, and maybe three teams for the NCAA baseball tournament.

The Mountain West title game is Sunday afternoon between UNLV and San Diego State, and both teams are more than likely going to be safe to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. The one outlier is New Mexico who had a great regular season by earning co-champions of the Mountain West regular season, but they are squarely on the bubble to earn a tournament bid.

There are still many conference title games going on Sunday, but lets take a look around the Internet to see where the Mountain West teams are projected when the NCAA tournament field is announced.

Heading into Sunday UNLV had a RPI of 26, San Diego State 43 and New Mexico at 65.

Here is Baseball America's update after Saturday's games:

San Diego State won two games Saturday, beating Nevada 3-2 and UNLV 9-1 to force a decisive rematch against the rebels on Sunday. Both teams should get at-large spots, so San Diego State's win against Nevada was good news for bubble teams. UNLV is an at-large lock, while the Aztecs do remain on the right side of the bubble, so landing the automatic bid would be nice.

Here are ESPNU's projections, but this is prior to the conference tournament:

The Mountain West also appears to be a three-bid league entering conference tournaments.

UNLV (33-21, 20-10) and New Mexico (37-18-1, 20-10) tied for the regular-season crown, with UNLV taking the top seed in the tournament by winning the season series. The Rebels, who are hosting the tournament, are safe regardless of what happens.

New Mexico and San Diego State (37-18, 17-13) are on the bubble with RPIs in the 50s. A similar RPI was enough to earn an at-large bid for the Lobos last year, when they ran away with the regular-season title. The Aztecs are also on the right side of the bubble thanks to their 8-5 record against the top 50.

Perfect Game likes the Aztecs chances in making the NCAA tournament:

San Diego State: I think the Aztecs are in good shape, but they certainly helped their case Saturday with a pair of wins in the Mountain West tournament over Nevada and UNLV. SDSU will now face UNLV a second time for the title. The Aztecs are up to 44 in the RPI with an 8-6 record vs. RPI Top 50 and 14-9 mark vs. RPI Top 100. The committee also should like the fact the Aztecs finished strong, sitting at 7-3 in their last 10 contests.

The NCAA tournament teams will be announced tonight, and the bracket revealed on Monday.
