Spartans Win First Game of MWC Baseball Tournament

The first game featured two teams fighting for their lives as the play-in game is single elimination; loser goes home. The winner doesn't have it a lot better as they have to play another game later on Wednesday. But, they're still alive. Play ball!

Spartans Win Play-in Game 11-3 to Stay Alive

Now don't go there. No Bee Gees or anything like that. For the Spartans it was a bit of satisfaction as they won easily 11-3 to advance. I was a bit surprised at the score more than anything. However, starting pitcher (and second team All-MWC) Kalei Contrades (5-2) was pretty much in cruise control the whole game. He struck out 11 while walking a single batter in a dominating complete game. The Spartans now need to rely on the second tier of pitching which hasn't held up in the past. Senior second baseman Jacob Valdez led the attack by going 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and senior catcher Kyle Gallegos went 3 for 3 for a perfect day at the plate.

The Falcons could muster only seven hits in the game and the top of the lineup had two hits total for the first three hitters. Noah Pierce and Jake Schomaker each had two hits to pace the Falcons. Senior, and second team All-MWC pitcher, Cameron White was the losing pitcher in the contest as he went six innings. The Spartans hit him pretty good as he gave up a run in the first and two in the third as the Spartans never trailed. For Mr. White, it's now on to more important things although you would have a tough time convincing him of that right now.
