The first half of the first half was not kind to the Lobos. Cameron Bairstow made two quick jumpers, but then the Lobos did not score again for about six minutes. And even then it was only from a Deshawn Delaney free throw. By that time the Lobos were in an early hole trailing Stanford 20-5.
The Stanford Cardinal came out on fire hitting their first six shots, including 2 three-pointers. New Mexico fought back to finish the half down my five, 32-27. The Cardinal finally cooled down, going only 5-21 after that hot start.
Unsurprisingly, Bairstow leads the Lobos with 12 points and Chasson Randle leads the Cardinal with 11 points. Anthony Brown has another nine points for the Cardinal-all from threes-and Stefan Nastic added six.
Hugh Greenwood hit two huge three-pointers to keep the Lobos buoyant. Kendall Williams, the second leading scorer for the Lobos, has had a rough start but finally managed to hit a layup near the end of the half.
Stanford is shooting 39.3 percent overall, but a surprising 55.6 percent from beyond the arc. New Mexico is shooting 42.9 percent and 28.6 from outside. The Cardinal are out rebounding the Lobos 17-14. They are also leading in assists and turnovers, 8-4 and 5-6, respectively.
The Lobos need to collect their wits and play with poise, something they have done the latter part of this season. That Harvard upset from last season seems to be lingering in some of the Lobos' minds. They have got to play in the moment and play to win.
