Who Is The Most Dangerous Basketball Team?

New, comment

As the conference schedule starts winding down teams will start pushing for seeding position. Come tournament time, who could potentially cause the top teams nightmares?

The Mountain West basketball regular season will be over in about three short weeks. Its sad but the good news is that championship week and march madness is almost upon us. San Diego State is currently leading the conference at 11-1, but they still have to play New Mexico twice. The first match up is this upcoming Saturday at The Pit. The winner of those two match ups will be the regular season champion. If the Lobos sweep the series they'll win the outright title, but if they split they could only hope for a share unless the Aztecs lose.

The mess in the standings begin when you go from 3rd-7th where all five teams are within 2 games of current 3rd place team UNLV. The league isn't as competitive from top to bottom than in recent years but there are numerous teams that could potentially be a nightmare for the Aztecs and prevent them from possibly getting a number two seed come NCAA tournament time. There is also teams that could be playing to get in the NIT postseason tournament that are looking to better position themselves for the committee. So who truly is the most dangerous team in the conference?

Wyoming - This is a gritty defensive team that is going to make you earn a win against them. They are ranked 12th in the country in scoring defense allowing only 59.6 points per game. They're also ranked 14th in offensive scoring percentage. They're middle of the road in blocks and defensive rebounding, but can they score points if they get into a high scoring game. Their goal is to keep teams under 65 points in they can they're a very dangerous team come conference tournament time.

UNLV - They're hosting the conference tournament and they are very good at home. That alone makes them a dangerous team. However their inconsistencies make them extremely vulnerable. They're 14th in rebounding and rank in the top 40 in points allowed. The Rebels need to become more consistent in the last few games to keep momentum rolling come tournament time. They could sweep the season series against New Mexico at home on Wednesday.

Boise State - A top 50 scoring offense that can put points on the board. The team ended a three game skid on Saturday upsetting New Mexico at home. The Broncos finish with 4 of 6 on the road starting tomorrow against a reeling Colorado State team. They need to at least get to the conference semis to possibly be in consideration for an at large bid.

Utah State - A veteran team who has shown some growing pains getting used to being in the new conference. The Aggies were in midst of a three game winning streak before losing a tough game at home to UNLV. They went into Moby Arena and destroyed Colorado State, the final score is not an indication of how the game truly was. If this team can get back to its winning ways in the final five games two against SDSU and UNM they could potentially be a very tough out come tournament time.

It looks to be another exciting ending to the conference regular season but the Lobos and Aztecs better look out because there are teams ready to play spoiler. The most dangerous team in my opinion is the home team Rebels. If they consistently play like the team they're capable of then no one is beating them at home. Gear up basketball fans because its going to be a run ride down the stretch.
