The San Diego State Aztecs athletic department announced today that linebacker Jake Fely and cornerback J.J. Whittaker would return to play another season in 2015.
The NCAA granted Fely a sixth year of eligibility in July after he played in only four games last season. And he didn't see the field much more this season, playing in three games before breaking his wrist against Boise State. Fely will be classified as a senior in 2015.
Whittaker will now play his second consecutive healthy season as an Aztec after missing his first three seasons due to a variety of injuries. He finished this year with 90 tackles, four tackles for loss, 17 pass breakups, five interceptions and one forced fumble. Now every starter on SDSU's 2014 secondary, which allowed the 19th-fewest passing yards per game in the country, will return in 2015.
The Aztecs will finish their 2014 campaign when they play the Navy Midshipmen in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23 at 6:30 p.m. That game will be on ESPN. Fely will not play in that game.
