College basketball rankings: San Diego State drops to 18th in AP poll after 13-point loss to Washington

A five-spot drop for a team struggling to find any offensive rhythm.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego State Aztecs (6-2) dropped five spots to No. 18 in this week's Associated Press top 25.

The Aztecs were ranked No. 13 last week and dominated University of San Diego last Thursday. But they -- rather, their offense -- looked wretched in a 49-36 loss to Washington in which they shot 20 percent from the field.

No other Mountain West team made the top 25. But the Colorado State Rams received 28 votes after their program-best 8-0 start; those 28 votes put the Rams at No. 33.

Washington surged up to No. 17 after beating the Aztecs on Sunday, and Utah worked its way up to No. 13 after upsetting Wichita State last week. As long as Washington stays ranked, SDSU's loss won't look awful. And as long as Utah stays ranked, SDSU's win against the Utes will look very good.
