Utah State head coach Matt Wells' name continues to pop up in coaching searches around the nation. First it is Oregon State where Wells' name popped up and now this time it is for the opening at Tulsa. Wells, along with Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashee are on Tulsa's coaching wish list, according to the Tulsa World.
Wells is a native of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, which is just a hour and a half outside of Tulsa. Additionally, Wells was the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa from 2002-06.
Wells has equal ties to Utah State, he played and earned his degree from USU. Additionally Utah State's trajectory, 18-9 over the last two season is much better than Tulsa's (5-19). Wells is just getting to his crop of recruits as his second season as head coach of the Aggies is coming to a close.
It is unlikely he abandons them for anything less than a significant step up on the coaching scale. Although any coaching rumor brings with it some anxiousness, but fans should rest easy with this one knowing that it is unlikely Wells takes a step down to Tulsa.
