New Mexico Basketball: Lobos Face New Mexico State in round two of the Rio Grande Rivalry

The Lobos go into the second game of the Rio Grande Rivalry on a four game winning streak.

The New Mexico Lobos will travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico, on the heels of a 21-point victory over Central Arkansas. The Lobos were led Deshawn Delaney’s 22 points and 13 rebounds as New Mexico smothered the Bears in the second half to overcome an early deficit to win their fourth straight game. The Lobos are now 7-3 on the season and will look to hand their cross town rival their first home loss of the season.

New Mexico State is fresh off a loss to Baylor dropping the shorthanded Aggies to 4-7 on the season. The Aggies have had the tougher schedule of the two dropping road games to Wichita State, Baylor, St Mary’s Wyoming, Oral Roberts and the Lobos.  The Aggies are led by Seniors Remi Barry and Daniel Mullings who are averaging 13 points a game each.

In the first game the Lobos used their size and athletic ability to hold the Aggies to a season low 47 points on way to an 18 point victory.  The Lobos will look to deploy the same strategy in Las Cruces. Lobo head coach Craig Neal does not feel as if the Lobos are playing the defense they are capable of but they have held all of their opponents this year to under 65 points.

If the Lobos plan to when this game they must guard better than they did against Central Arkansas in which the Lobos gave up several open shots. Look for the Lobos to play more man to man then the zone they did in Albuquerque. This game will be closer to the one in Albuquerque but look for the Lobos to come away with the win.
