Max Yon scored 20 points to lead the Air Force Falcons to a 66-51 victory over Regis University in an exhibition match-up Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena. The Falcons displayed a strong defensive effort against the Rangers, forcing 23 turnovers on the day. The Falcons were more successful in this game against the Division II team from Denver than last year's performance that saw Regis defeat Air Force 70-65.
The first half was a competitive battle, with the Falcons holding a 1-point lead at the the half. The Falcons would slowly pull away in the second half, with Yon and fellow senior Kamryn Williams leading the way. Williams would finish with 10 points and six rebounds on the afternoon.
The Falcons got their first look at some freshmen who will be asked to play key minutes for the Falcons during the 2014-15 season. There were three freshman who saw significant rotation minutes against the Rangers. Matt Mooney had the best game, leading the team with four assist on the day. Trevor Lyons and C.J. Siples also played during the day as the Falcons continue to look to replace transfer Tre' Coggins in the back court.
The Regis game is the only scheduled exhibition as the Falcons now prepare to take on the Army Black Knights Friday evening in West Point, New York. The Falcons and Black Knights will be the second match-up of the evening in the All-Military Classic. The Citadel Bulldogs and VMI Keydets will kick off the two-day tournament. The tournament is in its fourth year and Air Force has experienced great success in the event. The Falcons won the tournament in 2011 and 2012 before losing their first game in the short tournament history last year to VMI in the championship game.
