EA SPORTS Maui Invitational championship game final score: Aztecs beat themselves, lose 61-59 to Arizona

SDSU never seemed to click in the second half and fell for the fourth straight time to Arizona.

The Arizona Wildcats (6-0) outlasted the San Diego State Aztecs (5-1) tonight in Maui, beating SDSU 61-59 to win the 2014 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational.

Here are the telling numbers from this game: SDSU shot 13-24 the free throw line, Arizona shot 20-24 from the free throw line. There's the difference.

Freshman Stanley Johnson led the Wildcats with 18 points and nine rebounds. Sean Miller especially needed Johnson to step up tonight as T.J. McConnell and Gabe York got into foul trouble very early.

Winston Shepard kept up his great tournament play, leading the Aztecs with 14 points and six rebounds. But even he performed poorly at the line, making just on of three of his free throws.

After the game, Shepard and Trey Kell were named to the all-tournament team.

The Aztecs seemed to catch a break late when McConnell missed his first free throw of a one-and-one with 42 seconds left. Shepard grabbed the rebound and passed it to Dwayne Polee II with the Aztecs trailing 55-51. But Polee wasn't ready for the pass and it kicked off his legs for SDSU's 14th turnover.

SDSU now has a few days off before hosting crosstown rival University of San Diego on Dec. 4.

Arizona next plays Dec. 2 when it hosts the Garner-Webb Bulldogs.
