Derrick Jones in the fifth-best small forward in the nation, according to 247 Sports, and he will be a UNLV Runnin’ Rebels next season. Jones announced on ESPNU that he would be attending UNLV, as he chose the Scarlet and Gray over Auburn and UConn.
Jones will fit in with UNLV’s current wings as he is 6-foot-6, like Jordan Cornish, Patrick McCaw and Jelan Kendrick. This is the height Dave Rice seems to like; it allows him to play small ball while having everyone on the court still be 6-foot-4 or taller.
"I felt like it was a family there ... It felt like a brotherhood," he told ESPN after announcing.
He also said in the ESPN broadcast that he needs to work on his ball handling and jump shot since he will be playing the two-guard for UNLV next season.
His surge in AAU over the past summer is what helped Jones have his recruiting pick up and allowed more offers to flow in, which included UNLV and other top programs.
Jones is the second commit for UNLV in the class of 2015. 6-foot-4 shooting guard, Jalen Poyser is also headed to Vegas.
Here are some highlights of Derrick Jones.
