College basketball preseason rankings: SDSU ranked No. 16 in AP Poll

San Diego State is the only Mountain West team ranked in the initial AP poll.

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The AP released its initial college basketball rankings on Friday with no shock that Kentucky earned the top spot ahead of Arizona then followed by Wisconsin, both of which earned first-place votes.

The only Mountain West team to be ranked is San Diego State who enter the poll at No. 16, which is one spot higher than the USA Today Coaches Poll. UNLV is getting some poll consideration as they are receiving two points in the poll and that differs from the coaches poll which saw New Mexico earn votes but not UNLV.

There are plenty of chances for Mountain West teams to enter the rankings since the league has games against ranked foes as No. 25 Utah vs. San Diego State, No. 5 Kansas vs. UNLV and a potential San Diego State vs. No. Arizona matchup in the Maui Invitational.

Other matchups between teams earning votes are against BYU, Cincinnati, and UTEP plus a few other TBD games in these preseason tournaments.
