Today the Mountain West released the 2014-15 media preseason poll. Thirty-five sports writers covering MW teams contributed to the preseason poll and all but one predicted the San Diego State Aztecs would finish first in conference.
Writers also made all-Mountain West selections and predicted winners for newcomer of the year, player of the year and freshman of the year.
SDSU forwards Winston Shepard and Dwayne Polee II both made the preseason all-conference team; the Aztecs are the only squad with multiple all-MW members. They are joined by Wyoming's Larry Nance, Jr., Boise State's Anthony Drmic and Colorado State's Daniel Bejarano. Shepard is the only junior in a senior-heavy all-conference team.
Mountain West media also predicted forward Aneglo Chol would be the newcomer of the year. Chol will play his first season at SDSU after sitting out last season because of transfer rules. The former Arizona Wildcat logged 63 games in Tuscon. But despite shooting 71.7 percent from the floor, he only averaged a little over 10 minutes per game.
"When I was at Arizona I felt like I didn't show all that I could do," Chol said at SDSU's first official practice. "Now I get the opportunity."
The media also predicted Nance, Jr. would be the conference player of the year and UNLV's Rashad Vaughn would be the freshman of the year.
