Could Matt Wells be a candidate for the Louisville job?

Utah State head coach Matt Wells name is being linked as a possible candidate for the open Louisville job.

Utah State head coach Matt Wells has just one year experience as a head coach and he has done a solid job with a 9-5 record, making the Mountain West title game, upsetting nationally ranked Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl. Most of that was done without star quarterback Chuckie Keeton.

With that success in his first year as a head coach will lead to an opportunity of better jobs, and while Wells has not officially been linked to any jobs -- unless that unfounded rumor of Wells to Wake Forest counts.

The Louisville job recently opened up and Wells has some connections to the school as he was a quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator in 2009, so there is a connection but not a strong one. However, out of the initial lists Wells is just one of a few who have actual experience coaching at Louisville.

Louisville's search has resulted in 100 or 200 potential coaches or representatives contacting the school about the open position, according to athletic director Tom Jurich. That is a high number and there could be some exaggeration on Jurich's part since this job has only been open, and who knows if Wells' representation reached out or not.

Even if Wells is on the radar of Louisville he is low on the list as multiple reports are saying that Arizona's Rich Rodriguez is their top target. However, if Rodriguez could not be had then Wells could shoot up on Louisville's list.
