There was some skepticism at the last minute whether he would return to college basketball or head to the NBA, but the allure of playing for Coach Eustachy was too strong. After a brief recruiting period in which he garnered interest from Miami and Florida State along with CSU, Behanan decided to play out his final 'half-season' of eligibility in Fort Collins.
Behanan was an integral part in the Cardinal's run to an NCAA Championship last season, including a 15 point 12 rebound title game. In his three seasons with Louisville, he averaged 7.6 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. He was a top 25 player coming out of high school and will be one of the most athletic players to play at Colorado State. Eustachy was especially complimentary of the kind of player he is.
"Chane is one of most talented players in the country, and he will be a key addition to our program next season. He has excelled at the highest level of collegiate athletics and there is no doubt that he will be one of the highest profile players to ever compete on the hardwood for the Rams."
Behanan will not be able to bring that talent to the hardwood until December due to his expulsion from Louisville. On December 30th, Behanan was dismissed from the Card's basketball team after another breach of team rules. Although the reason for his dismissal was never made public, it is generally believed to be from substance abuse issues. Behanan has spent the last month in a special rehabilitation program designed for athletes led by John Lucas.
With Eustachy's history of substance abuse and recovery, there really could not be a better situation for Behanan to go into. It will allow him to continue his treatment under someone who has been through highs and lows of recovery, while also getting the opportunity to finish his college career with a proven coach. Eustachy has a history of successful transfer students including current scoring leaders Daniel Bejarano and JJ Avila.
Behanan will join fellow transfers Stanton Kidd, John Gillon, and Dantiel Daniels eligible to play next season.
