Nevada vs. San Jose State game preview: Wolf Pack, Spartans begin conference play

Nevada and San Jose State meet up as both teams begin conference play on Saturday night.

Nevada goes on the road to San Jose State after a week off in a key West division showdown. The Wolf Pack are considered a favorite, alongside San Diego State, but with this being the first conference game everything is still in play for everyone.

The big story line in this game is that San Jose State has benched starter Blake Jurich and will start quarterback Joe Gray instead. Gray has only played sparingly this year but there is a chance that the Spartans passing game will get a boost. Also, it will help that wide receiver Tyler Winston. Also, what may help San Jose State is that running back Jarrod Lawson has game under his belt after missing the first two games due to being suspended.

Without knowing how well Gray plays at quarterback makes this game a tough one to call, or even to know how well he will move the Spartans offense.

With San Jose State there are still a lot of unknowns since they got hammered by Auburn, yet beat North Dakota easily. The Minnesota game is probably what should be expected from the Spartans and that game did not go well as the Gophers ran at will over the Spartans.. If that is the case, then look for Nevada to run the ball with quarterback Cody Fajardo and maybe Don Jackson since the Spartans running game has been a sore spot for the San Jose State defense.

Nevada has gotten the job done against Washington State and came very close to defeating Arizona. The offense is not as explosive but the senior leadership of this Wolf Pack team is showing as they are able to keep pace with teams even with under performing on offense.

This could be the one game where the Nevada offense puts up big numbers against this San Jose State defense, and until the Spartans prove otherwise they will need a decent amount of points to be able to keep pace with Nevada.
