SERIES RECORD: Lobos lead the series 11-9
The Lobos had a disappointing loss to Boise State last week. Despite leading most of the game they found themselves needing another Lamar Jordan game winning drive but with a controversial call and their inability to stop Boise's offense in the second half, the Lobos once again saw themselves on the wrong side of the score board. The Lobos continue to play better and aside from the 25 point loss to #6 Arizona State the Lobos have had opportunities to win all of their games this year with them being decided by 14 points or less. The Lobos who can still can be bowl eligible must beat two of the conference's top teams in the last three weeks if they want to reach post season play this year. Their journey begins this week in Logan, Utah, as they face the Utah Sate Aggies. Here are three reasons why the Lobos will upset the Aggies.
1 Next Man up: When you are young team and in the process of building a program depth is not always an option. This was the case for Bob Davie during his first two seasons at UNM, but this year it has been different before last week's game the Lobos had already dealt with various injuries in their secondary, Carlos Wiggins has been limited this year and running back Crusoe Gongbay and quarterback Cole Gautsche have already been lost for the season.
Each time the next man has stepped up and played Lamar Jordan and Jhurell Pressley have flourished with in their expanded playing time this year. Now with Pressley out for the year it time for Teryion Gipson and Romell Jordan to step up for the Lobos at the running back. Gipson had 205 yards and three touchdowns against Boise State in an expanded Role. On the defensive side the Lobos will be without the conference's leading tackler in Dakota Cox look for third year Lobo Michael Arrendondo take his place.
2 Lamar Jordan: Jordan seems to be on the list every week but the Lobos are just a different team with him at quarterback. Jordan was efficient last week completing 9 of 16 passes for 122 yards and added 53 yards rushing. Jordan was a knee away from another possible game winning drive. This is now his team and he no longer has to look over his shoulder and wait for the possible return of Gautsche so he is able to feel comfortable in his role and it shows the Lobos put up the most points by an opponent last week against Boise State with 49 points. Look for Jordan to guide the Lobos to another high scoring game.
3 Road Warriors: The Lobos are 3-1 away from University Stadium with their only loss coming to Air Force by four points. Maybe it the opponents or maybe it's the lack of fans pressure but they Lobos have been able to pull out the close wins on the road. This week will be the team's biggest test on the road but for a team with a chance to play spoiler look for the Lobos to continue the trend of close road wins beating the Aggies, 35-31.
