The San Diego State Aztecs (16-5, 6-2 Mountain West) handled the Fresno State Bulldogs (10-11, 5-3 Mountain West) 58-47 tonight in Viejas Arena.
Senior guard Aqeel Quinn led all scorers with 16 points on 4-6 shooting despite playing with a painful lower back.
The Bulldogs hung tough with the Aztecs for most of the first half, trailing 18-16 with 5:50 to go until halftime. But Quinn hit his stride at that point and scored six points to help give the Aztecs a 32-22 halftime lead.
The second half belonged to redshirt-junior forward Angelo Chol, who scored 10 of SDSU's 26 points in the last 20 minutes.
Freshman forward Malik Pope came back down to Earth a little bit after his 22-point performance in Fort Collins. He scored three points, all on free throws, and grabbed four boards. He also ran the floor after one of those rebounds and almost beat every defender for a huge dunk, but he was fouled on his way up.
Junior guard Marvelle Harris led the Bulldogs with 13 points on 5-12 shooting. Fresno State fans nationwide gasped collectively midway through the second half when Harris went down with an apparent right knee injury. He returned to the game almost immediately, but he didn't look the same for the rest of the game.
SDSU next hosts the Utah State Aggies (12-8, 5-3 MW) this Saturday at 5 p.m. PT. The Aggies just clobbered the Wyoming Cowboys (17-4, 6-2 MW) 56-44 at home.
Fresno State next travels to play the Colorado State Rams (18-2, 5-2 MW) this Saturday at 3 p.m. PT.
