2013 Week 5 Mountain West Football Odds: To Blowout Or Not To Blowout

With most of the games fairly unbalanced this week, Chris decides whether the blowout spreads will cover.

USA TODAY Sports

Week 3 Record: 4-3 (No Week 4 betting post)

Season Record: 14-13

Have you all gotten a chance to place your bets yet? No? Alright, well here's some guidelines on how to bet Week 5 quickly before tonight's matchup.

All times are listed in Pacific Time Zone.

6:00 PM: Utah State (-10) at San Jose State, O/U=62.5- With Utah State looking lackluster last week versus USC but San Jose State not looking much better, this game will come down to who can rebound the best. There will be old WACtion to be seen tonight, but can the Spartans make the game more competitive than last season?

My Pick - Utah State covers - Chuckie Keeton will be back against a defense that left Minnesota giving up 6 touchdowns on the ground. Also: Spartan Stadium is not the Coliseum.

12:30 PM: UTEP at Colorado State (-14), O/U=53- UTEP looks bad, but Colorado State does not look much better. What's surprising about this spread is that it opened up at -10 for the Rams. Do the Rams look 4 points improved in the last week? We'll find out.

My Pick - UTEP beats the spread - Yes, Cal Poly is a good FCS team, but I'm seeing the final outcome being a 10-13 point victory for the Rams. A full 14 points is a bit much for me right now, but hey, I'm 0-3 thus far on CSU so far. So 0-4 is very much on the horizon.

4:00 PM: Wyoming (-12) at Texas State, O/U=56- Brett Smith is very quickly competing for the MWC Player of the Year award, and should be decimating the Bobcats defense.

My Pick - Wyoming covers - I wonder if the UTEP/CSU and WYO/TXSt game odds were flipped on accident. I see the Pokes winning by a minimum of 3 touchdowns.

5:00 PM: San Diego State (-17) at New Mexico State, O/U=54- In a battle of the 0-fers, the Aztecs travel to Los Cruces to seek a win. Muema is back, though still not playing 100% and Quinn Kaehler has performed solidly since taking the starting job from Adam Dingwell.

My Pick - SDSU covers - Despite the Aztecs being 0-3, this game should be no contest. The Aggies have given up 50 points over 4 games and have only scored 15.5 points per game in that time.

5:00 PM: UNLV (-2.5) at New Mexico, O/U=54- UNLV is favored in this game. ON. THE. ROAD. How, you ask? People figured out the Lobos' offense: bottle up Kasey Carrier and the Lobos don't have an offense.

My Pick - UNLV covers - UNLV saved my win streak two weeks ago, and I'm picking them again. Last season against an improved New Mexico, UNLV blew them out for one of their two wins. This season, the game will be closer, but the Rebels will win again and be *GASP* OVER .500%.

5:05 PM: Air Force at Nevada (-10), O/U=59- In a battle of heavy run-powered offenses led by third-string quarterbacks, Nevada looks exponentially better than Air Force. The Falcons have bled heavily in facing their three toughest opponents (yes, I'm convinced that Utah State, Boise State and Wyoming are offensively better than Notre Dame...), and now they have to face a wounded Wolf Pack team who have seemed to recover after facing two very good opponents.

My Pick - Nevada covers - With the dismissal of Jaleel Awini, Air Force has hit a low for this season, and unfortunately it's not coming back up any time soon.

7:15 PM: Southern Miss at Boise State (-28), O/U=56.5- Providing the Broncos defense can recover from last week, this should be no competition. The Golden Eagles have averaged 10.3 points through 3 games this season.

My Pick - Boise State covers - Southern Miss has looked lost since Larry Fedora left the program and the Broncos offense still looks strong (Come on, you score 40 points in a game and lose? That's not an offensive problem.). I suggest you watch USC-Arizona State for a competitive game at this time.

9:00 PM: Fresno State (-18) at Hawaii, O/U=58.5- This is another game where the odds-makers give the underdog way too much credit. The Bulldogs are firing on all cylinders, while the Rainbow Warriors played 4, count them, FOUR quarterbacks last week.

My Pick - Fresno State covers - I love college football at all hours of the night, but this might be one to just skip and go to bed early.
