The New Mexico Lobos were hoping that its offensive attack got back on track after getting past UTEP last week, but that was not the case as Pitt held New Mexico's rushing attack to 213 yards in a 49-27 win.
The rushing attack up the middle was non-existent for the Lobos and star back Kasey Carrier was very ineffective as he ended up with just 22 yards on seven carries, and just one in the second half. Crusoe Gongbay ended up leading the Lobos on the ground with 95 yards on just 10 carries, but it was not enough.
The New Mexico offense struggled under Clayton Mitchem who had issues running the option offense with minus-9 yards on nine rushes, fumbled twice -- recovered both -- and 8 of 15 for 64 yards. Cole Gautsche did come in the second half to get the New Mexico offense with two touchdowns, 50 yards on the ground and misfired on one pass. The New Mexico offense ran much better with Gautsche in the game, but it was too little too late for New Mexico.
Even in the first half when the game was close, New Mexico had forced two turnovers and solid special team play but only managed six points. For the game the Lobos were plus-three in the turnover margin, yet could not make any plays.
Pitt was led by quarterback Tom Savage who was on target with 13 of 17 completions for 236 yards, he also threw two touchdowns plus had a pair of interceptions. While the passing game was effective, the running game was even better as Pitt had 119 yards from James Conner and Isaac Bennett had 101 yards. The duo scored two touchdowns apiece and averaged 8.5 yards per carry.
This loss came down to New Mexico's offense not being able to take advantage of the turnovers they forced against Pitt. Specifically, the running game was a mess and could not get going, and as for the quarterback spot Gautsche must be the starter. He runs the option much better than Mitchem and despite his throwing issues needs to be the starter.
