Colorado State vs. Cal Poly game still happening despite severe weather

There has been some severe weather in the Colorado area and the Colorado vs. Fresno State game has already been postponed due to severe flooding in Boulder. As of now the Colorado State vs. Cal Poly game is still scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m. local time in Fort Collins.

The University is closed and there are rivers that are 100 times normal flow causing bridges to be closed, and according to the Denver Post there is only one way in or out of Fort Collins and that is through the bridge on Harmony Road.

There have already been planned tailgating sessions closed due to the weather, and the weather is slowing down preparations for this game.

Athletic director Jack Graham is monitoring the situation, but as of Friday morning plans to keep the early afternoon kickoff time:

"At this point, we're proceeding on the assumption that we're going to play the football game," Graham said. "That decision is subject to reconsideration, based upon any new developments as well as any new information.

"One of the things we're concerned about is emergency services we might disrupt to run a football game. We're aware of that and working closely with campus police, city police and state police. The county (sheriff's department) already has been pulled off the football game so they can deal with all the other issues they're dealing with.

"We're not going to do anything that's going to cause stress on the community or jeopardize people's safety."

One reason that it seems that the game is being pushed to be played is that Cal Poly is already in Fort Collins, and all of the game officials are currently in Denver. There is another storm that is looking to cross through Fort Collins overnight, but the chance of rain is about 30 to 40 percent.

Assuming the game is going to happen there could be an attendance issue with people taking care of any wreckage from the storm that was caused to their home, plus there is little access to Fort Collins. Currently only 11,000 tickets have been handed out for the game -- only 2,500 of the 10,000 student tickets have been picked up, and usually the rest get them on game day -- which could possibly lead to an all-time attendance low. The fewest people to witness a Colorado State football game is 12,600 back in 1971 against Idaho.
