The quarterback woes for Colorado State have been well documented and so far starter Garrett Grayson is struggling to retain his job over Conner Smith and Nick Stevens. However, there is a quarterback not even on the roster that feels they could be the one to save the team, in 2014.
That player is 2014 verbal commit Coleman Key. Key is a three-star quarterback out of Broken Arrow, Okla., and after watching the second Colorado State game of the season feels he could help the team right away. Key was unable to see the Rams play in Tulsa due to other obligations, but he watched in TV and came up with the assumption that he could be a big help in 2014.
Key understands that he could possibly redshirt in 2014, but he says that his game is rapidly improving:
"My overall speed, footwork in the pocket and quickening my delivery are the things I've worked on the most. I can use my feet well. It's not like I'm a heavy-footed guy who can't get out of the pocket.
"The difference with me this year is that I have a whole season of experience under my belt. I'm improving my decision-making, the game is slowing down and I'm a better leader."
Those are all good things to have and hopefully those skills can translate once he steps on campus in Fort Collins later this year, and just maybe he can compete for the starting job.
Earning the starting job in 2013 could be difficult for Key since Grayson is a junior, Smith is a sophomore and Nick Stevens is a true freshman. So, unless there are transfers, position changes or just an amazing performance by Key once arrives on campus he is likely to redshirt with the depth at quarterback the Rams have.
Key has been a commit with Colorado State since July and he is firm with his commitment, and since he has pledged his allegiance to the Rams no other schools have contacted him.
