2014 Colorado State football recruiting: Rams land ninth commit in DB Devin Jones

The Rams got some good news yesterday after a tough weekend in which they lost to Tulsa on a last second field goal. Cornerback Devin Jones from Woodland, CA gave a verbal commitment to play for Coach McElwain and the Rams.

Devin Jones is ready. In comments made to the Coloradoan, Jones made it clear he is not coming to Colorado State to wear a redshirt.

"I'm hoping to come in and not redshirt," Jones said. "I want to start my first year. Their No. 3, Shaq Bell, I saw that he's a senior, so he's going to be leaving next year. There's an open spot right there."

That is quite a bold statement with talented cornerbacks already in place. Bernard Blake (Junior) and DeAndre Elliot (Sophomore) will likely hold onto the starting spots until they graduate; and with promising freshmen Tyree Simmons and Justin Sweet getting time to grow this season, Jones will have to have game to back up his confidence if he wants to crack the rotation.

Jones is small, 5'11" and 160 pounds and is out of Woodland Calif., but he has good hands and runs a 4.5 second 40-yard dash. He has tallied 11 tackles and two interceptions in two games so far this season. His only other offer came from Division II school North Dakota, but he has been garnering interest from Mountain West rivals New Mexico and Fresno State. Jones is the ninth commit so far in 2013 for McElwain, and the second defensive back, joining Marcus Wilson from Valor Christian in Colorado.
