The San Jose St. Spartans could be down one of their best defenders heading into the school's first year in the Mountain West. Starting linebacker Vince Buhagiar has not practice in weeks with an undisclosed shoulder injury, and it is severe enough that head coach Ron Caragher is considering redshirting the senior.
Caragher is not ready to make an announcement yet on Buhgiar's status, but said "we could be moving in that direction," referring to the possibility of using a redshirt.
This would be a big loss for San Jose State as Burhagiar put up big numbers last year with 89 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks. Burhagiar also was our No. 33 player in our top 50 player list counting down to the start of the season.
Buhagiar started to play the outside linebacker spot in the new 3-4 defense, and started getting acclimated with the new spot in this past spring. If Burhagair is going to redshirt this could be a big blow to the San Jose State defense, he has been a starter since 2010 and had shoulder surgery in 2011 which limited him that year.
There is no word on if that shoulder injury is related to the 2011 ailment, and if Caragher is to redshirt Buhagiar look for him to wait as long as possible to make that choice. San Jose State opens the season a week from Thursday against Sacramento State, so it would make sense for Buhagair to sit that game before any redshirt decision is made.
