2013 Mountain West player rankings: No. 14, Wyoming QB Brett Smith

The 50 player countdown to the start of the 2013 college football season continues with No. 14.

The countdown of the 50 best Mountain West players, as well as the countdown to the start of the season, and today's number is 14. That means at this time in two weeks we will be actually waiting for games to be played later that Thursday night.

The No. 14 player on our list is Wyoming Cowboys quarterback Brett Smith. Some maybe shocked by this placement of Smith, but he truly is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. In 2012, he did not run as much and saw his production dip from 710 yards to just 248, and his average per rush drop down from over five yards a carry to a pedestrian 2.18.

However, Smith made up for that by greatly improving his touchdown to interception ratio which went from 20 to 11 and up to 27 to six. He also threw for 200 yards more than the prior year and that was also by playing in two less games, plus he missed his top receiver Robert Herron for four of those games.

Smith has tremendous talent and if the talent around him stays healthy, keeps him protected, and make plays; then he could possibly be inch close to the level of David Carr, David Fales and Chuckie Keeton.
