First year quarterback Nick Stevens out of Vista Murrieta High School in California, the high school tape showed how much skill he possessed, but no one was sure if it would translate to the college game right away. So far it appears it has with his solid performance in yesterday's intra-squad scrimmage.
Although it was against the "two and three" defenses, throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns while completing 69 percent of his passes is an impressive task for a freshman. Statistically, he outperformed the other quarterbacks on the roster and received praise from head coach Jim McElwain afterwards, albeit in his typical ambiguity.
Here is the surprising news from the Coloradoan:
"I thought the young freshman kid did OK, and it'll be interesting to see the film moving forward from there. ... He might become relevant here based on what he did.''
Stevens still has work to do in order to surpass Garrett Grayson or Conner Smith who are in front of him on the roster, but with his skill set it is not impossible to think he can legitimately challenge for the top spot. Stevens will start to get more reps with the second unit during practices and will have another chance to prove his ability in the team's next scrimmage.
