2014 San Jose State football recruiting: Spartans land 3* QB Ian Fieber

Mission Viejo Quarterback Ian Fieber made a verbal commitment to San Jose State Spartans.

USA TODAY Sports

Consensus three-star quarterback Ian Fieber has just committed to the San Jose St. Spartans, according to Jimmy Durkin of the San Jose Mercury-News. Fieber is a pro-style quarterback who had a very good junior season last year with 24 touchdowns and over 2,800 passing yards. Ian Fieber is a pro-style pocket passer with the arm-strength to throw it deep, which fits well with the new San Jose State offense.

With David Fales graduating next year and no heir-apparent in the wings, any quarterback coming in has a shot at starting. Combine that with returning talent at wide receiver and San Jose State becomes a quite attractive opportunity for quarterback prospects.

Fieber could be one of those under looked quarterbacks as he had just one offer which cam from Eastern Washington, but he was getting looks from Pac-12 schools. However, Fieber also competed well in the ESPN Elite 11 camps, so it is not like he is a player who came out of nowhere.

He took an unofficial visit to San Jose State this past weekend, and obviously liked what he saw:

"It was a great trip, I really liked it there," Fieber said. "It's a very nice campus, nicer than I expected and I liked the area as well. ... San Jose State has a very solid program and overall, the trip was great, it couldn't have gone any better."

Though star wide receiver Noel Grigsby will be leaving with Fales, whoever grabs the starter position will still have some weapons to throw to; Jabari Carr who had 639 receiving yards last season as well as Tyler Winston who so far is impressing many in training camp and who will possibly red-shirt this year.

Here are highlights of Fieber at the Elite 11 camp:

I think that it's almost certain that he'll be the starting quarterback in 2014. If only for the reason that Ian Fieber will be "Ron Caragher's guy." The other quarterbacks on the roster were recruited by previous head coach Mike MacIntyre and none of them were able to beat David Fales for the starting job. Joe Gray has some potential, but all we've seen of him is in garbage time for the San Jose Spartans last year. Admittedly, he did fine then, but unless quarterback Joe Gray has a monster off-season, starting quarterback will be Ian Fieber's job to lose.
