The second-most prestigious college football award behind the Heisman Trophy is the Maxwell Award. The Maxwell Award released their 2013 watch list and it includes six Mountain West players. Those six MWC players are:
• Chuckie Keeton, QB, Utah State
• Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
• David Fales, QB, San Jose State
• Cody Fajardo, QB, Nevada
• Kasey Carrier, RB, New Mexico
• Adam Muema, RB, San Diego State
The list is surprisingly light on defensive players overall, as there are just six defensive players, and three offensive lineman. The odds of a Mountain West player winning this award is a long shot at best, but there could be a few on this list who play well enough to earn a semi-finalist nod (they do that for this award, right?)
The odds on favorite are to be Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney and Ohio State's Braxton Miller. Expect a quarterback to win this award as has been the case dating back to 2002, so with that tidbit there is a chance that a few of these Mountain West players could stay on the list late in the year. As for a win, good luck with that.
If there were to be one who could make some noise for this award, it would have to be Derek Carr since Fresno State should be a very good team, and he is likely to put up a lot of stats throwing the ball to Davante Adams. Then perhaps David Fales could make some noise, but a lot will depend on how well San Jose State does in 2013.
