Craig Thompson on MWC title game: League is still 'negotiating'

The Mountain West title game is still not finalized.

Typically at media days there will be a big announcement by certain schools, or the leagues in general. A typical announcement this year was to talk about a leagues new bowl line up going down the road. As for the Mountain West, a big announcement was thought to be made on the conference title game, but nothing happened.

Commissioner Craig Thompson spoke to the Idaho Statesman and came out and said that the title game details are still a work in progress:

Thompson said negotiations are ongoing between the league and CBS Sports to broadcast the league's championship game. "CBS owns the rights. We've been negotiating draft contracts, but it's not final," he said.

Not sure what is holding this up, but a decision needs to be made soon about the inaugural conference title game. CBS Sports owns the rights to the broadcast and from the little of what Craig Thompson said it seems like that the title game will be on either CBS Sports Network or CBS.

CBS would be ideal since it would give the league a proper showcase, but the time of the game is an issue. The SEC title game is at 4 p.m. ET and if the Mountain West were to be the lead in that would mean a 12:30 p.m. ET kick, far too early for those Mountain and Pacific time zones. The game could possibly be after the SEC title game and go up against the Pac-12, Big Ten and ACC title game, but the lead in could be big following the SEC title game. The third option would be on CBS Sports Network either Friday night or Saturday with a 3 or 4 p.m. ET kick off.

Whatever decision is going to be made it needs to be done soon, and making an announcement at media days would have been the best possible time. Fully expect a decision to be made in the next few weeks.
