2013 NFL Draft profiles: Boise State CB Jamar Taylor

The Boise St. Broncos could get another first round pick in the NFL Draft, with the latest being cornerback Jamar Taylor. Heading into the pre-draft hoopla, Taylor was considered to be maybe a second or third round selection, but he has shot up the draft boards after the season ended and considered a late first- or second-round choice.

Taylor was a 2012 all-Mountain West performer in 2012 and racked up four interceptions, nine pass break ups, three forced fumbles, 51 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Basically he gets all over the field and make plays. In his 42 career games he has 18 pass break ups and 12 picks.

He is a shutdown corner who would lock up with opposing teams top receivers, but he also is versatile. With the Broncos he played the boundary corner, essential would be the cornerback who would line up closest to the sideline to where the ball is snapped.

Taylor is a very versatile defensive back who could play both press, and off coverage as well as playing in zone coverage. He is a very quick player and can change directions at ease which is the reason for so many interceptions and pass break ups.

One downside to Taylor is that he did not get to go up against too many top notch teams, so he has not had a consistent week in and week out going up against elite wide receivers. Had he played in a better league Taylor could easily be a first round pick, and possibly crack the first half of the round.

His best game was a defensive battle in a 7-6 win against BYU. In that game he led the Boise State defense with an interception, forced a fumble, seven tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. BYU does have an elite receiver in Cody Hoffman who he limited to just three receptions for 21 yards. What makes this performance possibly not as good is that the BYU quarterback throwing the ball was Riley Nelson who had his worst game of his career before getting benched, and the other happened to be a redshirt freshman in Taysom Hill.

Boise State has somewhat outgrown their stigma of a smaller school in the NFL Draft, just look at Doug Martin last year and Kyle Wilson a few years prior to that. However, that is probably his biggest weakness as Taylor will have some nay sayers who would not draft him in the first round due to playing at Boise State to go along with his lack of playing against the best.

Look for Taylor to be taken late in the first round or early in the second round.
