Steve Alford who recently agreed to a 10-year deal to stay in Albuquerque to coach the New Mexico Lobos, is now heading to Westwood to coach the UCLA Bruins. It makes complete sense for the good folks on Twitter to react to the hire, and there are plenty of jokes, mixed in with praise:
@geoffgrammer He broke up with us by TEXT?Not even a phone call? Nice. Krebs looks like he got kicked in the gut. Oh, wait, he did.

BREAKING: Steve Alford is already on the hot seat at UCLA for a lack of postseason success.

Howland had to go. Alford's a pretty strong Plan B. So why does it feel like UCLA has made a mistake? college-basketball.si.com/2013/03/30/did…

UCLA hires........................ (Wait for it)............... Steve Alford from New Mexico
— Jay Williams (@RealJayWilliams) March 30, 2013
Told by sources Steve Alford was upset at UNM AD for publicly saying his raise would be paid for by increased ticket prices, concessions.
— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanCBS) March 30, 2013
UCLA did a nice job here. Maybe Alford's style will adjust to be more "sexy" but he got UNM rolling. Real rolling.

Well then... UCLA hires someone no one expects, but he can certainly recruit West Coast. Weren't going to get perfect guy. Got good option.

That's an...interesting hire by UCLA. Steve Alford? Fire Ben Howland with 3 Final Fours, hire guy who lost as a 3-seed to Harvard. OK, UCLA.
— Brendan Prunty (@BrendanPrunty) March 30, 2013
Steve Alford will be fine at UCLA, I think. But I bet the school never thought it would hire a man with a 5-7 record in the NCAA Tournament.

So there ya go, that is how those who cover college hoops, and don't, feel about Alford heading to UCLA.
