Florida Gulf Coast is continuing their magical run in this NCAA tournament as they easily defeated San Diego State, 81-71 to advance to the Sweet 16. This is the first time a No. 15 seed has advanced past the first weekend, and they did it against San Diego State by putting up an offensive show, that of course featured many jaw-dropping dunks.
San Diego State's defense was just not their Sunday night, they allowed Florida Gulf Coast to control the pace and did not get in their face to contest shots. For the game, Florida Gulf Coast shot 55 percent from the field and made 7 of 17 shots from three-point range.
Compare that to San Diego State who made did make six shots from beyond the arc, but they had to attempt 22 to get that far. The Aztecs offense was off all night as they converted just 44 percent from the field.
San Diego State was just out played against Florida Gulf Coast in the second half, and the turning point was when Sherwood Brown reentered the game with just under 12 minutes. At that point, the Eagles went on a 17-0 run over the Aztecs. Brown finished up with 17 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
That was the difference, as was the Florida Gulf Coast defense which forced San Diego State into 17 turnovers, and turned those into 22 points off of turnovers.
San Diego State was thoroughly out played in the second half, and were unable to find any consistent type of play from any of their players. There were four Aztecs who scored in double figures with Jamaal Franklin leading the way with 20, but it was not enough.
Sunday night, Florida Gulf Coast was the better team, and probably would win more often than not if the two teams played another dozen times.
