San Diego State gives Rocky Long a two-year extension

The San Diego St. Aztecs have elected to extend head coach Rocky Long's contract for another two years. This past 2012 season was the most successful for the Aztecs in a very long time, they won their first conference title -- shared with both Boise State and Fresno State -- since they won the WAC title way back in 1986.

Here is a statement from the school:

"I am very excited about the future of Aztec football under Rocky Long's leadership," said athletic director Jim Sterk in a release. "Coach Long has continued the growth and the success in all aspects of our program, while gaining more regional and national interest. I look forward to next season as we look to defend our Mountain West title."

This is a well deserved move for the school to reward Long for his solid performance ever since he took over for Brady Hoke two seasons ago, and in that time has led the Aztecs to a 17-9 record plus a pair of bowl games. Long has already said this is his last coaching job, so he will be roaming the sidelines through the 2017 season.

There is no raise raise for Long and he will be making the same $800,000 for the extra two seasons. Long was not concerned about making more money, but would rather get better facilities for the program. He was also able to get his assistant coaches a pay raise.

Long's long term goal is to get San Diego State into a consistent top-25 program:

"The (plan) was to within five years be in a couple bowl games and win a conference championship. So I guess we're one year ahead of the plan," Long said. "Now, the plan is to try and move to an elite level, try to be a top-25 team like our basketball program.
