A rumor was floating around the internet that Utah State head coach Matt Wells was heading to Wake Forest to be their next head coach. Of course it started a firestorm across those Utah State faithful, but the tweet that started this mess has been since deleted.
To clear things up, Wells joined 1320 KFAN in Salt Lake City and addressed the issue. Wells was as surprised about being mentioned that he was going to Wake Forest since he was in meetings all day preparing for the Mountain West title game.
Here is what Wells said on the rumor:
I don't know much about it, there is nothing to talk about as far as I am concerned. No, I don't have anything to talk about. I don't know anything about it I have been in player meetings and just found out.
We have seen coaches deny before but Wells has strong ties to Utah State and is an alumni. There may have been conversations with his agent on his behalf, but listening to Wells it seems that he is being truthful.
While Wells said there is no truth to the rumor, it is not stopping Wake Forest fans pointing out his credentials to be their next head coach.
