In a little more than one day there are at least three names that are tied to the Wyoming vacancy. The first to surface was Colorado School of Mines head coach Bob Stitt, but that is coming from sources as Stitt has said nothing about the job.
The other two candidates come from Football Rumor Mill who speculate that current Sam Houston State head coach Willie Fritz is a serious candidate, and to a lesser extent Oakland Raiders wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore. Gilmore might be a familiar name as he was a very serious candidate five years ago, and reportedly already had a staff in place if he were to get the job.
Having played and coached at Wyoming is a plus for Gilmore; as for his coaching career he has mainly been a receivers coach at every stop which also include Colorado, Houston, Nebraska, Purdue, USC and the Raiders. HIs highest coaching responsibilities came at Nebraska where he was the recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach from 2008-10.
Fritz on the other hand has been a college head coach at Division II Central Missouri for 13 years with one playoff and bowl appearance, and for the last three years has been the head coach at Sam Houston State and has appeared in back-to-back FCS national title games, both loses. Currently, he has Sam Houston State back in the playoffs and in their first game they knocked off Southern Utah University.
Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman said he wants the Cowboys new head coach to have head coaching experience, but by not having that experience would not be a deal breaker.
