Hawaii to have open quarterback competition this spring

This spring Hawaii will open up the quarterback competition to all available signal-callers.

The Hawaii Warriors quarterback situation this past season was a hot mess, and that is being kind. On our podcast we called the position the quadrant since there were multiple games where head coach Norm Chow would play four quarterbacks. To the shock of no one those games did not go all that well for Hawaii.

Once Chow decided to stick with senior Sean Schroeder late in the year the offense actually was somewhat productive, and Ohio State transfer Taylor Graham had a tough year in Hawaii before his season ended with a shoulder injury to his non-throwing shoulder.

Heading into the April spring workouts the quarterback spot will be completely open, according to Chow. Graham could have surgery on his shoulder but even if he does have surgery soon. The other players in the mix are Ikaika Woolsey, who started two games this past season, and Jeremy Higgins, who started a game in 2012. Each of those three players were earn equal reps during spring.

Then there is incoming freshman Larry Tuileta -- he is a two-star sport and will also play volleyball -- who could be in the mix during summer workouts and fall camp. Chow needs to have all options open heading into the 2014 season at the quarterback position, and once he lands on a starter Chow needs to stick to that guy and not play quarterback musical chairs.
