College basketball rankings: AP poll has New Mexico No. 23 in preseason poll

New Mexico is the only Mountain West basketball team to be ranked in the preseason AP; UNLV and Boise State do receive votes.

USA TODAY Sports

The AP poll dropped its preseason basketball poll on Thursday and it is similar to the coaches poll that was released two weeks ago. The top four are the same with Kentucky taking the majority of the first-place votes, followed by Michigan State, Louisville and Duke; the latter three also received first-place votes.

Within the Mountain West, it is only New Mexico who earned a spot in the top 25 by coming in at No. 23, three spots lower than the coaches poll. While the Lobos are the only Mountain West team to earn a spot in the rankings, both UNLV and Boise State earned some consideration by earning votes. The Broncos earned 22 points and UNLV eight.

Once the season goes on look for multiple Mountain West teams will be ranked, but for now the league will settle for having only New Mexico ranked.
