Apparently who coaches your football team is really important, because Boise State opened up as a 4.5-point favorite over Oregon State for the Hawaii Bowl. That line has flipped quickly to Oregon State now a 2.5- or three-point favorite after Boise State lost head coach Chris Petersen who took the same job with the Washington Huskies.
Boise State will be led by Bob Gregory for at least the bowl game, and he is the assistant head coach and linebackers coach. The quick flip in the line makes a lot of sense since Petersen has been part of the Boise State program since 2001 where he started off as the offensive coordinator before being named the head coach in 2006.
Another reason for Oregon State to be a favorite is that the quarterback situation for Boise State is still up in the air as Joe Southwick is healthy after breaking his ankle, but then there is Grant Hedrick who has played well stepping in for Southwick.
As for Oregon State, they do have just a 6-6 record but quarterback Sean Mannion has the ability to carve up any secondary and could do so against Boise State in the islands.
