Well, that is what head coach Rocky Long is saying, but there is little reason to think that it is going to be anyone else rather than Oregon State transfer Ryan Katz. There is no reason that Katz would transfer for his final year of eligibility to be a backup quarterback.

Adam Dingwell would not be a bad choice to replace the departing Ryan Lindley since he has been in the program for three years and is heading into his redshirt sophomore season. His familiarity with the system is a reason for optimism since he spent last year learning Andy Ludwig's system, and he is the only quarterback on the roster with live game experience with the Aztecs.

Back in spring camp it was Katz who had separated himself from the pack, including Dingwell, so to say that the quarterback position is open seems to be more of a way to get the best performance in fall camp. Long even said that Katz's experience in big games while playing in the Pac-12 even though he had a bad junior year

Long feels that their quarterback position will be one of strength for San Diego State with either Dingwell or Katz under center:

"Adam is a great leader, who just lacks game experience," Long said. "I am comfortable with the two quarterbacks that we have competing for the position and believe that we will be very productive at quarterback this season."

This really just seems like a way of manufacturing a quarterback competition, but then there is Long saying he will use two quarterbacks, and maybe even some wildcat:

"We might play two quarterbacks at the same time. We might alternate them," Long said. "We might bring in plays with the quarterback. We're going to use a lot of wildcat. Sam Meredith does a really nice job of carrying the ball from the shotgun."

Two quarterback at the same time, that seems a bit ambitious. However, with Ludwig as the offensive coordinator do not put anything past him. While at Utah, Ludwig was known for some unconventional play calling.

Once a starter is officially named odds are it will be Katz.
