Boise State Officially Leaves Mountain West

After a wild day of speculation and reports about their future, the Boise St. Broncos have officially left the Mountain West and will join the Big East for football starting in the fall of 2013. The report comes from the Las Vegas Review-Journal who is reporting that Boise State sent their notice to leave the league to UNLV president Neal Smatresk.

The letter arrived shortly before midnight eastern and beat the deadline for Boise State to make their decision. There is no word on what Boise State is doing with their non-football sports, but as of July 1, 2013 they will no longer be a member of the Mountain West conference. Their football is off to the Big East, and their non-football sports more than likely will be heading to the Big West.

This was a tough decision for Boise State to make and they needed all the time they could get to make this move. By formally withdrawing from the Mountain West prior to July 1, the exit fee they now owe the Mountain West will only be $2.5 million instead of something that could have been north of $10 million.
