Half of the quarterfinal matchups in the 2012 Mountain West Conference Tournament were not close outside of San Diego State's buzzer-beater win over Boise State and the closer than expected matchup between UNLV and Wyoming where UNLV struggled in the second half to allow Wyoming to make this game somewhat close in a 56-48 final.
The other two games featured the Colorado St. Rams showing that they mean business by just crushing the TCU Horned Frogs 81-60. The other saw New Mexico take care of Air Force 79-64.
Here is Friday's schedule, and both games will be on CBS Sports Network (bracket here):
9:00 p.m. ET: No. 1 San Diego St. Aztecs vs. No. 4 Colorado St. Rams
11:30 p.m. ET: No. 2 New Mexico Lobos vs. No. 3 UNLV Runnin' Rebels
These games should be excellent games, and I could see Colorado State pulling off the upset if they play like they did against TCU and if San Diego State plays like they did against Boise State. Colorado State and San Diego State both split their games and neither were really that close with both teams winning on their home court, so with this game being on a neutral court we will see what happens.
As for who will win, I am leaning toward San Diego State, but according the the mighty AccuScore they actually give Colorado State the edge by winning this matchup 51.8 percent of the time with a final score of 65.1 to 64.9. Basically a toss up after the 10,000 simulations.
The second game should be interesting because these two teams are very good, however the two times they played it was a complete blowout in favor of the home team. As we all know UNLV is hosting the Mountain West tournament on their home court, so the edge has to go to UNLV.
As for UNLV vs. New Mexico, AccuScore gives UNLV a slight edge by winning 51.3 percent of the time and an average final score of 67.2 to to 66.1 for UNLV.
The only bad thing about these games are that they are played so late at night, too bad they could not be moved up two hours, but here is hoping these two games are awesome and worth staying up late for.
