Dillon Baxter Being Held Out Of Spring Practice Due To 'Personal Issues And Academics'

New location, same result for the former USC Trojans and current San Diego St. Aztecs running back Dillon Baxter. Baxter had issues at USC with missing curfew, allegedly getting caught smoking marijuana and other issues that led to him transferring.

Baxter will now be sitting out spring practice with San Diego State:

"He's working on personal issues and academics, and if all that turns out all right at the end of the semester, he'll be back with us at training camp (in August)," [head coach Rocky] Long said.

Just because Baxter is a former five-star recruit is why this is any news. Baxter can not even play in 2012 since he has to sit out a year due to transfer rule. Also, Baxter was not even going to see any action this spring:

"The plan was for him to be out here in the spring, yes," Long said. "He wasn't going to get any reps, though. He would have been standing watching everybody else play. He wasn't going to get handed the ball one time in spring practice. That was our agreement with him from the very start. So this extra time he's spending on academics is very good for him."

Sounds like it is academic issues and the coaching staff wants Baxter to get that under control so that he can stay eligible. It looks like the news was bigger than it really should be due to the player involved, however looking at Baxter's track record one should not just assume it is a minor issue.
