San Jose State hires Ron Caragher to be next head coach

San Jose State has hired University of San Diego's Ron Caragher to be their next head coach.

The San Jose St. Spartans found their new head coach on Monday, and it is Ron Caragher who is coming from the University of San Diego. USD is one of the lower levels of FCS football as they do not give out athletic scholarships. This may seem like an odd hire on the surface, but this is where Jim Harbaugh got his coaching start, and he has since gone on to Stanford and the NFL, with great success.

At San Diego, Caragher had a career record of 44-21, and in 2012 he went 8-3. Caragher knows that this will be a tough challenge by making the move from the lowest level of FCS football to a mid-major FBS program.

San Jose State athletic director Gene Bleymaie was not shocked to lose Mike MacIntyre, but he was prepared with candidates:

"I had a list of tremendous coaches that I was interested in and I felt the search committee would be interested in," Bleymaier said. "We were definitely prepared. We weren't surprised to lose Coach Mac. We were sad and it was unfortunate, but not unexpected."

Bleymaie said that there were a total of five candidates who interviewed for the job, but he would not releases those names.

The one real positive for Caragher is that starting quarterback David Fales should be back under center next year, and he is a great piece to build a team around.
