The BYU women's softball team came out on top of the Utah Utes in a doubleheader Saturday in front of a record crowd of 1,488 people at Gail Miller Park. BYU (37-16,11-2) entered Saturday's contest needing one win to hold off the Utes (29-21,7-4) and secure first place in the MWC. They won two. The score in the first game was 3-0 and the second was 12-1. These two wins over the Utes clinched BYU's undefeated season at home with a 14-0 record this year. The Cougars have won 11 straight home games over conference opponents and 34 straight against non-conference opponents.
"It feels great," BYU coach Gordon Eakin said after the game. "This has been the toughest but most gratifying championship we have ever had."
The win over rival Utah marks its third straight Mountain West Conference title for the women Cougars in the team's final appearance in the league and ensures them a spot representing BYU and the MWC in the upcoming NCAA Regionals. The Cougars await to hear where they will play in the NCAA Regional beginning Thursday. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced tonight (Sunday) at 8 p.m. MT on ESPNU.
