Assuming this latest report is true by ESPN's Joe Schad, former Notre Dame Fighting Irish and current ESPN analyst is set to become the New Mexico Lobos head football coach. Davies spent five seasons at Notre Dame from 1997 to 2001, and went 35-25 in that span, with an 0-3 record in bowl games. The Notre Dame job was Davies first and only head coaching gig and viewed as a disappointment. Davies has worked ever since as an analyst for ESPN.
This job as we all know here will be extremely difficult. New Mexico went 2-26 under Mike Locksley and 1-5 under interim head coach George Barlow. The last time New Mexico had a winning season was in 2007 where they went 9-4 and went to the New Mexico Bowl. That team was coached by Rocky Long and one year before he resigned by saying there is nothing more he could do at New Mexico. By compassionate was much better at the job than Locksley by going 65-59 and going to five bowl games.
The tough job in New Mexico is recruiting since the state is not known for producing top high school talent, so Davie may have to use his stint at Notre Dame as a selling point (even I think that is a weak selling point) to get players.
According to KOB channel 4 in Albuquerque a press conference is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
