The Colorado St. Rams may be without starting quarterback Pete Thomas when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs this Saturday. Thomas sprained his knee in the 18-15 loss to the San Diego St. Aztecs and was replaced by true freshman Garrett Grayson who went 6-for-15 for 40 yards and will start if Thomas can not go.
At this early part of the week Thomas' status is not certain:
"We'll know more as he gets checked out," Fairchild said. "We'll see how available he is on Tuesday. It does not look to be season-ending I don't think."
Fairchild said Thomas's availability for Saturday's game doesn't depend on the quarterback practicing by a certain day of the week, rather how he looks if he does practice.
So, we wait to see how Thomas does in practice leading up to the TCU game.
However, Thomas is no longer the clear cut starter, Fairchild also said that regardless of Thomas' health Grayson will see action in the last two games this year:
Either way, Grayson - a player that has a lot of buzz among fans - will get at least share of live practice repetitions as the Rams prepare to face Mountain West-leading TCU in Fort Worth. And even if Thomas does return, Fairchild pledged to play the strong-armed Grayson to some extent anyway.
"He'll play now. He'll play some in every game," Fairchild said. "We've got to commit to him. Even when Pete's back, be it this week or next week, whenever, I think Garrett deserves the right to play in the games and we'll do that."
The backup quarterback is always popular and with Thomas not improving as much as coaches have liked is a reason to get Grayson action this year, and with no bowl game on the line might as well see what Grayson can do in real action.
