With the departure of Wyoming Cowboy quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, who is heading to a junior college, the quarterback race was to be between Sam Stratton, Austin Woodward, Emory Miller Jr. and incoming freshman Brett Smith to compete for the job. However, head coach Dave Christensen has already made the expected decision by moving Statton to running back and Woodward will be make the transition to linebacker.
This leaves only redshirt freshman Emory Miller Jr. and incoming freshman Brett Smith to compete for the starting job, well unless a junior college player is brought in during the summer. Smith is a two-star dual threat quarterback which fits the Wyoming system; his other offers came from San Jose State -- where he originally committed too -- as well as New Mexico State and Eastern Washington. Smith came from Oregon and was one of the top quarterbacks in the state, and is currently enrolled at Wyoming so that he could compete in spring football. Wyoming does have another verbal commit who is Adam Pittser out of Illinois and gave his verbal commit to Wyoming on Dec. 10, but he is not all that firm on his commitment as he is taking a visit to Colorado this weekend. It looks like his decision will come down between Wyoming and Colorado, and it would not hurt Wyoming to have a third quarterback on the roster if nothing else to add depth.
With no college experience between Smith or Miller Jr. Wyoming will not know anything until spring practices get underway on March 5.
