SDSU put last week's heartbreaking loss behind them and smoked Utah State 41-7 in front of 46,000 fans at the 35th annual KGB Skyshow at Qualcomm Stadium. The Aztecs scored three quick TDs in the first quarter to put the game away early as Ryan Lindley showed off his arm and his WRs. SDSU surpassed the 500 yard mark in total offense for the third time this season. The Aztecs have a bye week coming up and open Mountain West Conference play at struggling BYU as they look to advance to their first bowl since a 1998 Holiday Bowl loss to North Carolina.
The passing game finally outdid the running game for the first time this season as Ryan Lindley threw for 362 yards and 3 TDs. Freshman RB Ronnie Hillman had somewhat of an off-night running for 89 yards and the game-opening TD. Senior WR Vincent Brown scored his first two TDs of the season catching 5 balls for 177 yards.
Utah State was pretty much out of the game from the get-go as they didn't really have a prayer to stop the high powered San Diego State offense. Their close-call at Oklahoma seems like the distant past. Their only score was literally given to them by two back to back stupid turnovers by SDSU. After Lindley threw an ugly pick, Utah State went three and out and was forced to punt, but the receiver muffed the kick and was recovered by Utah State down near the goal-line. Other than that, Utah State never got close to another scoring drive.
Utah State and San Diego State share their next opponent. Utah State will play BYU while SDSU rests on their by week and then will travel to Provo to face the Cougars in Week 6. At this point it looks like the Aztecs might blow BYU out. The Cougars will try to get back on track against Utah State.
The Mountain West better look out! The Aztecs are a blown call away from being 4-0 and will be hungry for some home wins against Air Force and Utah if they can leave Provo with a win. What do you think TCU, Utah, Air Force fans?
